Try making ice cream at home with this simple experiment we found on howstuffworks.com.

Supplies:
1 T. sugar
½ cup milk, cream, or half and half
¼ tsp. vanilla extract (or other flavoring)
6 T. salt (rock salt works best)
1 gallon-sized Ziploc bag
1 pint-sized Ziploc bag
1 bowl
Enough ice to fill the gallon-sized bag halfway

  1. Mix the salt and ice in the gallon bag and set aside.
  2. Pour the milk, sugar, and vanilla extract into a bowl and mix.
  3. Pour this mixture into the pint bag and completely seal the bag.
  4. Put the (sealed) pint bag into the ice and salt mixture in the gallon bag.
  5. Make sure the pint bag is buried in the ice, then seal the gallon bag.
  6. Shake the bags for five minutes. You may want to hold them with a towel, since they will become cold and slippery from condensation.

The author suggests trying other flavor combinations, such as chocolate syrup!
