Are you ready for Girl Time?
It’s almost here, so mark your calendars for this special event all about girls and engineering! Since 2015, hundreds of families have come to The Works Museum to explore engineering with their daughters, granddaughters, sisters, and friends during this annual event. Girl Time gives participants a chance to meet and learn from women who work in engineering fields, as well as students pursuing STEM careers. With over 20 different hands-on activities such as building a model robotic hand and operating a balloon-propelled car, it’s a great opportunity for girls to roll up their sleeves and take on fun engineering challenges.
Why Girl Time?
A recent report from Microsoft called “Closing the Stem Gap” took a closer look at the topic of girls and STEM and detailed how important hands-on STEM experiences can be.
“A powerful way for girls to learn about the creative and impactful ways that STEM and computer science knowledge is applied in the real world is to let them explore those applications firsthand.”
The report also outlined the impact that positive women role-models from STEM fields can have on young girls stating that,
“Girls and young women have a hard time picturing themselves in STEM roles. They need more exposure to STEM jobs, female role models, and career awareness and planning.”
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why The Works Museum and our Girl Time sponsors are so excited about this annual event. We are proud to provide girls and their families with this unique opportunity for both hands-on experiences and learning from women in STEM fields.
Something for everyone
Wondering what you will find this year at Girl Time? With a wide variety of presenters and activities, you can be sure that there is something for everyone. Try your hand at driving a robot with the Ponytail Posse, an all-girl FIRST Tech Challenge youth robotics team. Or, if you prefer to be the one moving, check out an activity from TRIA that allows you to practice your form as you jump, squat, and stretch while learning about the work physical therapists do to improve people’s health. Girls who like working with their hands will enjoy a new activity from the Northern Central States Regional Council of Carpenters where participants learn to use tools to build a table. These activities and so much more are what make Girl Time such a unique and exciting event!
